A lot of Airdrie is newer development, which means young trees on open, windy lots that need the right start: correct planting, structural pruning in their first years, and watering that gets them through dry summers and Chinook winters.
Older parts of the city have the opposite problem, with fast growing poplars and spruce that have outgrown small yards. Those trees often need a crown reduction, clearance from roofs and fences, or removal in sections where they sit close to the house.

Common causes are planting too deep, too little or too much water, wind exposure, and damage from mowers or string trimmers at the base. An arborist can usually tell which it is from a look at the tree and the soil. Some trees recover with better care, and some are worth replacing early.
Not always. Poplars grow fast and their wood is weaker than many trees, so large ones close to a house deserve a proper look. Depending on its health and structure, a poplar may be kept with a crown reduction and deadwood removal, or it may be safer to remove it in sections before it becomes a problem.
