Book early. Spring is when winter damage shows up and many people want work done before the leaves come out. Spring work gets a seasonal 15% discount, and an estimate over the winter lets the job be scheduled as soon as conditions allow. Remember that elms cannot be pruned in Alberta from April to September.
Often, yes. Removing deadwood, reducing heavy or overextended limbs and lifting branches off the roof can add years of safe life to a mature tree and keep the shade and privacy it gives. If the tree is badly decayed or unstable, you will be told honestly that removal is the safer option.
