FireSmart guidance recommends keeping the first 1.5 metres around the house clear of flammable plants, pruning conifer branches up to 2 metres off the ground, and spacing trees so their crowns are at least 3 metres apart. Removing dead trees and branches helps too, because it makes it harder for fire to climb into the trees.
Yes. A tree leaning toward a house is taken down in sections, starting from the top, with each piece lowered in a controlled way rather than letting the tree fall. The lean, the weight and any decay are assessed first. If the tree is sound, reducing it may be an option instead of removal.
