Trees on your own property generally do not need a City permit to prune or remove. Public trees, including most boulevard trees, belong to the City of Calgary and are protected by its Tree Protection Bylaw, so they cannot be pruned or removed without City approval. Elms also fall under Alberta's April to September pruning ban.
