Hedge rejuvenation and shaping

An overgrown hedge takes over a yard. Cutting it back hard and reshaping it opens the space up and gives the hedge a fresh start.

Overview

A fresh start for an overgrown hedge

Rejuvenation is for hedges that have gone too far: too tall, too wide, or bare in the middle with all the growth on the outside. The hedge is cut back hard, in one go or in stages depending on the species, so it can regrow dense and healthy from lower down.

Shaping is the regular work that keeps a healthy hedge tidy, with straight faces, a level top, and a top slightly narrower than the base so light reaches the lower branches. Clippings are cleaned up before the truck leaves.

Questions

Common questions about hedge rejuvenation

Can an overgrown hedge be saved?

Usually, yes. Many deciduous hedges regrow strongly after being cut back hard, and a staged rejuvenation over two or three years suits hedges that would not tolerate it all at once. Some evergreens will not regrow from bare wood, so the approach depends on the species, which Marek will identify first.

When is the best time to cut back a hedge?

Hard rejuvenation is best done in late winter or early spring, before new growth starts, so the hedge can put its energy straight into regrowth. Light shaping can be done through the growing season. Before heavy work in spring and summer, it is always worth checking the hedge for nesting birds.

How often should a hedge be trimmed?

Most formal hedges look best trimmed once or twice a year, depending on how fast they grow and how crisp you want the lines. Informal and flowering hedges need less. Keeping the top slightly narrower than the base lets light reach the bottom, which keeps the hedge full rather than bare.
