Pruning that works with the tree

Good pruning starts with knowing the tree. Where a cut is made, how much is taken and when it is done all change how the tree responds. As an ISA certified arborist, Marek knows how each cut affects the tree, which is the difference between pruning and cutting until it looks tidy.

Typical work includes removing dead and broken branches, thinning a dense crown, correcting crossing or rubbing limbs, and lifting lower branches for clearance. Brush is chipped on site and the yard is cleaned up before the truck leaves.

Common questions about pruning and trimming

When is the best time to prune trees in Alberta?

For most trees, late winter while they are dormant is ideal, because the structure is easy to see and the tree is ready to grow over the cuts in spring. Dead, broken or hazardous branches can be removed any time of year. Elms are the exception, with a provincial pruning ban from April to September.

What is the difference between pruning and topping?

Pruning removes specific branches with cuts placed where the tree can seal them over. Topping cuts the main stems back to stubs, which causes weak regrowth and decay and shortens the life of the tree. If a tree has become too big for its space, a proper crown reduction is the alternative to topping.

How often should my trees be pruned?

It depends on the tree and its age. Young trees benefit from structural pruning every few years, while mature trees usually need attention when deadwood builds up or branches start crowding a roof, driveway or neighbouring tree. Marek will tell you what each tree on your property needs and when it needs it.
